Thinking out loud

Its funny what inspires people - inspires them to write, to dream.
CSI is running in the background, and I’m thinking murder. Earlier, we were listening to a ‘moods’ cd - contemporary synthesizer and mood music, and I was still thinking murder.
Other people aren’t quite wired the same way as me though. I’ve often wondered how someone can take a song that’s inherently about death and think its cheery, but at the same time, I’m beginning to wonder how deeply my ‘dark streak’ runs.
Its not normal to hear ‘Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence’ and think of a blood spattered room, after all. not in the context of an office, in a tower block and a fist or gun fight (I’ve seen Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, its a great movie, and not as happy as the music may indicate - nor the title. Its a fabulous movie though, with Tom Conti and David Bowie, and the composer of Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence himself, Ryuichi Sakamoto)
Inspiration, and ‘muse mugging’ are two aspects of how our creative brains process stimulii. I’m naturally tending towards death and destruction at the moment because both the serials I’m working on are handling that - the haunting and of beautiful music I enjoy by Mike Oldfield, or from the Pure Moods cd take on a completely different meaning if they are blasting through an alien sound system to fill the ship with SOMETHING familiar.
It also makes me wonder - what music do you listen do when writing, why, and is it in or ‘out’ of context for the ‘feel’ of the music?
