What should authors blog about?

Most of the time, when I’m asked about authors and blogging, it tends to be about one of a couple of topics, and most commonly ‘what should I blog about?’
Choosing topics to blog about is probably far simpler than most writers believe, but…having said as much, the biggest mistake any writer makes is being TOO promotional.
I know everyone that reads and writes blogs thinks that its important to talk about themselves CONSTANTLY. This isn’t really true. You should, of course, give your readers the opportunity to understand why they need to trust and buy from you - and you should, of course, give people information ABOUT your work, but that’s not quite the same as talking about yourself constantly.
The best writers blogs talk about craft, art, inspiration, sales, information, personal stuff and the etheral ‘joi-de-vivre’ that makes us each as unique as a writer.

On the rare occasion that I DO blog I tend to blog about what I’m attempting to write about that week, my reading habits, my gaming, and occasionally i just witter pish.
